Blog Posting Frequency July 3, 2005

I think posting frequency is a question that bloggers need to consider very carefully. I started a discussion thread on blogcatalog about “Blog Posting Frequency”, and what I saw from there is that most people post 1-5 posts a week.

Biodun of The Medical Plus.com said he will stop reading a blog if a blogger post too little or post too much. Cooper suggested that if blogging is your job,you need to maintain a schedule. But you need not worry if it is not your job. Check out these two interesting posts “Why Blog Post Frequency Does Not Matter Anymore” by Eric Kintz and “Does Blog Post Frequency Matter?” by Problogger (Darren Rowse).

Posting more doesn’t guarantee extra traffic but it can be a factor to consider. Chart your last few months of posts and see if there’s any correlation to rises and falls in your traffic – you might identify a trend!

Also remember, posting more creates more pages for Search Engines to index – every new post is a new doorway into your blog when it comes to search engines.

Worth noting is that some bloggers report that when they post less that they actually get more traction with readers. I know of one blogger who was posting 8-20 times a day and when he dropped things back to 1-3 posts a day he noticed not only increases in comment numbers per post but that his posts were being shared more on social media sites. At 8-20 posts a day posts were coming off the front page of his blog so much that readers hardly had a chance to read and share them.

Regularity and Rhythm is Important.
Find your blogging rhythm and stick to it. While readers don’t want you to be monotonous in terms of what you write – I’ve found they do quite often want it in terms of how you write – and more specifically in how often you write. People want to know what to expect – they buy into things that they know fits in with their own rhythm of life so if you start out writing daily but then increase the frequency to hourly you’ll probably find people reacting against it (and the same goes the other way around). Interested to hear how often others post to their blogs and how they’ve come to that rhythm of posting.

A Suggestion If You are Starting Out as a New Blogger.
For example – if your goal is 7 posts a week I generally would say to a new blogger to post around 3 quality posts in their first weeks, aim for 4-5 in the weeks after and then to ramp it up to 6-7 after a month or so. In this way you’re giving yourself room to get used to having to come up with an idea every day and you also give yourself a little more time to do other things that are important in the early days of a blog (networking, getting your design right, learning how to use your tools etc).
