2011’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run has retired. Long Run wasn’t able to show his old spark on Sunday in the hunter chase at Carlisle.
In addition to the poor performance of Long Run, rider Sam Waley-Cohen received a controversial seven-day ban.
Long Run is the previous winner of six grade 1 races in the UK as well as in France. Most will remember him for his Gold cup victory against Denman and Kauto Star when he was trained by Nicky Henderson at the age of six
in 2014 the dual King George winner had to sustain a leg injury when he was transported home following the race in the Grant People Chase De Paris.
It seemed that the horse’s enthusiasm remained at Carlisle and he was soon at the head of affairs in the 3m½ contest. There, Long Run was rated at least 11lb superior to any of his rivals.
His luck turned however when he lost his lead you to a bad mistake at the 10th. Following another two poor jumps at the same race, the helps for a win faded.
